Man behind infamous Glasgow Wonka experience put on sex offenders register
The man behind the Glasgow Wonka experience has been put on a sex offenders register.
It comes after Billy Coull was found guilty of abusive behaviour at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday (November 18) after repeatedly sending explicit pictures to a woman.
The court heard that the former charity worker messaged the woman from a Facebook account under a false name in March. He continued to message her on Snapchat and WhatsApp and repeatedly referred to her as “sexy,” “sugar lips” and “my wee charm” despite her asking him to stop, reports BBC News.
Coull then began sending images of himself in his underwear as well as more intimate images and was arrested after they were reported to the police.
His lawyer, Neil Stewart, told the court that Coull’s mental health had “declined” during the fallout from his failed Wonka event held in Glasgow earlier this year.
Advertised as “a celebration of sweetness and imagination” that was inspired by the hit movie Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet and the Roald Dahl book behind it, outraged parents began demanding a refund shortly after it opened, describing it as a “farce” run by “cowboys”.
A one-off documentary, Wonka: The Scandal That Rocked Britain, aired on Channel 5 after it went viral on social media. Coull at the time said the reaction had “ruined his life”.
The event gained so much attention that Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney even poked fun at it during a skit on her recent Saturday Night Live appearance and a horror movie based on the failed exercise called The Unknown, was commissioned by Scotland film production company Kaledonia Pictures.
Sentencing, the judge said the custodial threshold had been passed but he was able to impose an alternative to custody and Coull was given 120 hours of unpaid work and put under supervision for a year.
