Marcus Mumford says wife Carey Mulligan kicked him out of home so he could finish ‘RUSHMERE’

Marcus Mumford has revealed that his wife kicked him out of their home to get him to finish Mumford & Sons’ new album ‘RUSHMERE’.

The singer, songwriter and guitarist opened up about the writing process for the band’s latest album, and admitted that he underwent a period of writer’s block when trying to come up with lyrics.

Speaking on the Zach Sang Show podcast, Mumford revealed that the frustration around coming up with the lyrics to the title track alone led to him taking some time in a new environment. This, he shared, was the idea put forward by his wife, three-time Oscar-nominated actor Carey Mulligan.

The two have been married since 2012 and have three children together, although the Drive star made him leave the house around the time of the album’s writing sessions.

“My wife kicked me out of the house. She was like, ‘You are driving yourself and me, by the way, insane. You have got to go somewhere and be away from home to be an artist for a few days’,” he said.

“So I went to Istanbul and I sat in a cafe for three days and drank coffee, smoked cigars and wrote poetry like a prick. I allowed myself to go away and be an artist for a few days and then the ‘RUSHMERE’ lyrics came.”

The album arrived at the end of last month (March 28) and marked the follow-up to 2018’s ‘Delta’. It also marked Marcus Mumford, Ted Dwane and Ben Lovett’s first record as a trio, following the departure of banjoist Winston Marshall in 2021.

It went on to reach Number One on the UK album charts, despite facing tough competition from The Darkness, who dropped their latest album ‘Dreams On Toast’ on the same day and said they were determined to beat the trio to the top spot. By securing the peak position, it became the third Number One album for Mumford & Sons, following on from 2012’s ‘Babel’ and 2015’s ‘Wilder Mind’.

The band celebrated the release last week by playing an intimate show in Manchester as part of Amazon Music’s City Sessions.

As for more Mumford & Sons live shows, the band have shared details of an upcoming US tour along with over 20 live dates as part of a European and UK tour, also celebrating their LP.

Before the tour celebrating ‘RUSHMERE’ kicks off, the band will be taking to the stage this spring for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool – locking in a headline slot on May 25. Find tickets here.
