MARINA returns with blissful single ‘Butterfly’
MARINA has returned to music with her blissful new single ‘Butterfly’. Check it out below.
The eccentric single sees the pop star – real name Marina Diamandis, who previously performed under the moniker of Marina and the Diamonds – sing: “So I’m saying goodbye, goodbye / Watch me grow from afar as I turn into a butterfly / Now I’m leaving you behind,” declaring that she is putting herself first and transforming into the person she wants to be.
“Yeah I’m a butterfly / You just never see me spread my wings / I’m already high / Watch my life go ‘bling bling’,” she sings in the blissful and danceable chorus.
Directed by Aerin Moreno, ‘Butterfly’s accompanying music video sees MARINA perform the song in various glamourous outfits while dancing around various bedrooms. The track marks the singer’s first release since the deluxe edition of her 2022 LP ‘Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land‘.
Speaking last year to Rolling Stone about her forthcoming sixth album, MARINA shared: “I feel like this next record’s going to be important, and I think the poetry book is also reflective of that. I’m able to take a left turn and do something that was genuinely just for the joy of doing it. I’m in a separate part of my memory bank. That’s how it feels.”
She continued: “I’ve been writing for six months. It’s still at the beginning. I haven’t started producing anything yet. Part of me is desperate to get things out, but also, part of me is just saying, ‘Enjoy this process.’ Because this is my favourite thing: to build the record and build the world around it. I don’t have any timeline yet, but sooner rather than later. I know it’s been a while, but I’ve had things going on.”
MARINA also opened up about her sixth album last year after opening for Kylie Minogue at her BST Hyde Park gig. Speaking to Attitude after her slot at the show, the musician said: “I am working on a new record, and I am loving it. It will definitely be out next year.” Marina also hinted at new music with a tweet that simply read: “album six.”
The singer had a breakthrough in 2009 under the name Marina And The Diamonds and released three LPs under that moniker: 2010’s ‘The Family Jewels’, 2012’s ‘Electra Heart‘ and 2015’s ‘Froot’. In 2019, she released her fourth LP ‘Love + Fear‘ which was her first LP under her name MARINA. She followed this with 2021’s ‘Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land’
Back in 2023, the singer shared insight into her ongoing health struggles and diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome.
Speaking with NME at the time of the release of ‘Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land’, the singer confirmed that the LP was motivated by political factors, and saw her take less interest in gaining chart success than in her previous releases.
“We’ve seen an explosion of all of these social problems that have been building for years and years. They’ve always existed, but some of us, including myself, have not really had an awareness of them or a full understanding… it’s impossible not to let that influence your music,” she said.
“[Other artists] might be looking for this perfect pop hook that’s potentially going to get on radio or lead to commercial success. Whereas for me, I do feel like that ship has sailed,” she added. “I’ve had those moments, but as an artist, that’s not really what excites me anymore. It’s more like, ‘What am I interested in at the time? And what do I want to explore in my songs?’”
