Matthew McConaughey says he nearly quit acting after his romcom era in the 2000s
Matthew McConaughey has revealed that he nearly quit acting in the 2000s – find out why below.
In an interview with Glen Powell for Interview Magazine, McConaughey reflected on the trajectory of his career, especially in the 2000s, when he starred in a string of romantic comedies and desired to make something different.
During that period, McConaughey starred in romantic comedies such as The Wedding Planner (2001), How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Failure to Launch (2006) and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009).
McConaughey said to Powell: “I’ve usually zigged when I felt like Hollywood wanted me to zag. When I had my rom-com years, there was only so much bandwidth I could give to those, and those were some solid hits for me. But I wanted to try some other stuff. Of course I wasn’t getting it, so I had to leave Hollywood for two years.”
When Powell asked if McConaughey knew how long his hiatus was going to last, the Interstellar actor replied: “I had long talks with my wife about needing to find a new vocation. ‘I think I’m going to teach high school classes. I think I’m going to study to be a conductor. I think I’m going to go be a wildlife guide.’ I honestly thought, ‘I stepped out of Hollywood. I got out of my lane.’ The lane Hollywood said I should stay in, and Hollywood’s like, ‘Well, fuck you, dude. You should have stayed in your lane. Later.'”
Following his return to acting, McConaughey began pursuing grittier roles in The Lincoln Lawyer among others. In 2013 and 2014, McConaughey starred in three massive films back-to-back-to-back: Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf of Wall Street and perhaps his crowning achievement, Interstellar.
In 2014, McConaughey starred in HBO‘s True Detective alongside Woody Harrelson. The anthology crime drama has since spawned more seasons. The show’s most recent season, True Detective: Night Country, was co-produced by McConaughey and Harrelson.
In a five-star review of the latest series, NME wrote: “True Detective: Night Country is brilliant winter TV: scary, suspenseful and smartly constructed to leave you pondering every last plot twist and shock reveal.”
