Mel C on a Spice Girls reunion: “Come on! It’s time”
Mel C has spoken about hopes of a Spice Girls reunion, and said that she feels that “it’s time” for a comeback.
The singer and DJ made the comments during a recent interview with Rebecca Judd on Apple Music 1, where she appeared to promote her forthcoming solo album and debut fitness DJ Mix on Apple Music.
During the discussion, Judd asked the former Spice Girls singer about the potential of her reuniting with the other members – particularly with the 30th anniversary of their debut single ‘Wannabe’ on the horizon.
Explaining that she’d love to organise something to celebrate the milestone, Mel C said: “There has to be something befitting of 30 years since ‘Wannabe’. Once a Spice Girl, always a Spice Girl.
“We all feel like that, but we now are getting together because we know if we’re going to do anything, we have to start planning things to get things right,” she said, hinting that the remaining members are also open to a comeback.
“We have to start making the plans right now and putting them into action. So fingers crossed. I think me and Mel B are probably going to be going in there all guns blazing. Come on! It’s time!”
Later in the interview, the singer also spoke about teaming up with artists Rose Gray and Uffie for her forthcoming solo project, and said that she made the record in collaboration with the same people she worked with on Spice Girls releases.
“It’s been such a beautiful experience. I’ve been working with lots of my old pals, people you would’ve seen in other records, and Spice Girls records like Biff Stannard, Bryn Christopher, got back in the room with Bill and Ted, which is really good fun,” she said, adding that fans can expect more of a dance sound in the release.
“I’m a pop artist, but I love my dance music. I love so many genres of music, but right now DJing, I’m super inspired by that and I really want to bring my work as a DJ and my solo work as an artist a bit closer together,” she added. “So we’re going to have some fun remixes. There’s going to be some bops and I’m really excited to get it out there.”
Hopes of a Spice Girls reunion have been on the cards for years now and, although nothing has been officially announced, speculation grew last April when the iconic girl group were seen giving a surprise performance of their hit ‘Stop’ at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party.
Around that same time, Victoria’s husband David put a dampener on any potential rumours of a reunion, saying: “Unfortunately, that’s not happening. Victoria was so pleased to see the girls, and it was a massive part of her life, but obviously, all the girls have got their own things going on,” he continued. “They will do certain things together at certain times.”
Despite that, other members have dropped hints that they’d be willing to reform. Back in December, for example, Emma Bunton revisited their discography and shared a Christmas-inspired version of ‘2 Become 1’ with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra.
Before then, Mel B fuelled the rumours in March by saying that the group would “definitely [be] doing something” for their 30th anniversary.
Back in 2023, some fans were convinced that Spice Girls would perform in the Legends’ slot at Glastonbury that year after Mel B alluded to it on The Big Narstie Show. Mel C then shut the rumours down, saying it didn’t work logistically for the group.
The latter did come around to the idea of heading to Worthy Farm the following year though, saying last July that “there’s nothing I would like more” than a Spice Girls headlining slot at Glasto. “I think the absolute ultimate would be to do it with the Spice Girls,” she said. “There’s nothing I would like more. But you know, while they’re still making their minds up…”
The group had a reunion tour in 2019, but the line-up did not include Victoria Beckham. The last time they all performed together publicly was at the London Olympics closing ceremony in 2012.
