Metallica announce “immersive” new VR concert film capturing ‘M72’ tour
Metallica have announced details of an “immersive” new VR film concert. Find out more below.
The new launch comes as the thrash metal pioneers teamed up with Apple, and developed a new virtual reality concert film that is compatible with Apple Vision Pro.
Available from Friday (March 14), the immersive concert film is simply dubbed ‘Metallica’ and incorporates footage taken from the band’s recent run of ‘M72’ tour dates. The run of shows took place in countries around the world and celebrated the release of their latest album ‘72 Seasons’.
The footage used for the new collaboration with Apple was filmed at their final date, held in Mexico City last year, and features full performances of hit tracks ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘Whiplash’ and ‘One’. All of these were shot in Apple immersive video and show an ultra-high-resolution 180-degree video (as per Consequence).
It also includes spatial audio and gets as close as the band’s “Snake Pit”, to make it as immersive as possible. All of these features were captured with cable-suspended cameras, remote-controlled camera dolly systems on the stage, and stabilised cameras.

As well as the VR concert, Metallica are also teaming up with Apple to share a new EP using the spatial audio. This is also available from Friday and will be titled ‘Metallica Live from Mexico City’.

Yesterday (March 11), drummer Lars Ulrich spoke about the new release and venture into the VR world during a new discussion with Zane Lowe.
Speaking while at SXSW, he said: “It was just so cool, the filming part, but then the editing part — the first few times having the headset on and being able to do that [moves head around] and see and also hear the audio… It’s just fucking crazy.”

In 2023, the band’s European dates were given a four-star review from NME. “Metallica have always been a gateway band for heavy music, but there’s a renewed excitement around them now. Tonight’s surprising, ambitious and giddy gig matches that energy at every turn,” it read.
“Their closing crossover track ‘Master Of Puppets’ naturally goes off, but then so do all of the songs on the setlist. From the gorgeous ‘Nothing Else Matters’ through to the unifying ‘Seek & Destroy’, the majesty of heavy music is on full display throughout the gig as Metallica prove why they’re clearly still the greatest metal band around.”
Before then, their ‘72 Seasons’ album was also given a four-star review, and described by NME as a “thrilling sonic onslaught”.
The band are set to play more North American shows later this spring, featuring support from Pantera and Limp Bizkit. Visit here for remaining tickets.
