Moby has apologised to Smashing PumpkinsBilly Corgan for calling him a “deadbeat” who “owes him a remix”.

Back in 1997, the ‘Porcelain’ artist referred to the ‘1979’ singer as a “deadbeat” and told MTV News that Corgan owed him a remix, while on Corgan’s home turf at the Q101 Jamboree outside Chicago.

“A lot of times when I do remixes, rather than get the artist to pay me, I work on a barter system,” Moby told the outlet. “Right now my debtors, people who owe me, are Soundgarden and the Smashing Pumpkins, I did remixes for them and they didn’t pay me anything for them.”

He continued: “We did it with the understanding that they were supposed to do a remix for me, but unfortunately…with the Smashing Pumpkins I did a year and a half ago, and every time I see Billy I ask him where my remix is, but I can understand he’s kind of busy.”

Now, Moby has opened up about his statement in a new interview with Stereogum. After being asked about his general history will the Smashing Pumpkins frontman, Moby responded: “I’ve had this problem — I’ve had many problems — but one of my problems is that I think I’m being funny, and I end up offending people by trying to be funny.”

“That’s sort of what happened with Eminem. I thought I was making a joke, and he didn’t take it that way,” he added: “With Billy, I jokingly said, ‘Yeah, Billy Corgan’s a deadbeat. He owes me a remix.’ To me, that’s funny. But I’ve learned I should just simply not make jokes. It just gets me into trouble.”

The artist also went on to say that he has never bore him any ill will and explained ” It was just that frustration of wanting to explain to someone, ‘I was making a joke, I’m sorry, it got interpreted badly.'”

Elsewhere, Moby recently responded to Lana Del Rey‘s claim that he has “a mind like a steel trap” after he recalled a date between the pair in his memoir.
