‘Monopoly’ film receives mixed reactions: “What is the plot even gonna be about?”

Monopoly

A live action Monopoly movie has been announced, and the project has been met with a mixed response by online film fans.

Lionsgate announced that a movie based on the board game will be written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the duo who directed the recent Dungeons & Dragons movie. The film will be produced by game owners Hasbro Entertainment, and Margot Robbie through her production company Lucky Chap.

There have been many attempts over the years to turn the popular game into a film, with the most recent having Kevin Hart attached to star. However, this new incarnation has drawn derision from some users on X (formerly Twitter).

“How TF do you make a movie about Monopoly? What’s next, Hungry Hungry Hippos” replied one, while another asked: “What is the plot even gonna be about?”

One user questioned the relevance of the game in modern culture. “How are they gonna do this? WHY are they gonna do this?” they wrote. “I asked some young folks if they played Monopoly or Yahtzee, and they said ‘What?’. Never heard of either. Who will pay to see a Monopoly movie?”

One fan simply declared: “MONOPOLY IS A GAME NOT A MOVIE”.

There were some positive responses, including a pitch for cast members. “Which actors should play Mr. Monopoly? My money’s on Bryan Cranston or Paul Giamatti” wrote one, while another said “It’s my favorite game in the world. I want in”.

Barbie star Robbie’s involvement was greeted with optimism. “Margot Robbie is producing, this might actually be good” said one account hopefully, although others needed more. “I need Margot Robbie IN the film,” said another, “even if it’s just a cameo”.

One of Margot Robbie’s forthcoming projects, an adaptation of the romantic novel Wuthering Heights, was previewed by director Emerald Fennell recently.
