‘Monster Hunter Wilds’ has had an absolutely huge launch
The long-awaited Monster Hunter Wilds has had an absolutely massive launch with players praising the “absolutely amazing“ new game.
Monster Hunter Wilds is the follow-up to Campcom’s global breakout hit Worlds, which was released back in 2018. Described by developers as “the ultimate hunting experience”, Wilds sends you out into The Forbidden Lands to investigate reports of a legendary beast. “This is a story of monsters and humans and their struggles to live in harmony in a world of duality,” reads the official description.
Monster Hunter Wilds was released today (February 28) for PC, PlayStation and Xbox. A lot of people are already checking it out.
According to PC gaming platform Steam, Monster Hunter Wilds has already achieved a concurrent player peak of more than 987,000, making it bigger than blockbuster titles like Elden Ring (953,426), Baldur’s Gate 3 (875,343) and Marvel Rivals (644,269). That concurrent player peak is also the eighth biggest in Steam history, with many fans expecting the game to attract more than a million players today.
Pocketpair, the company behind Palworld, has also given developers the day off so they can play Monster Hunter Wilds. “We have received a series of mysterious reports from many employees that they may feel unwell tomorrow, so the company has decided to institute a special holiday,” they wrote on X.
In a four-star review, NME wrote: “Monster Hunter Wilds is still a worthy successor to World, focusing on the best aspects of the series such as the customisation and combat and refining them to create an unforgettable experience.”
However the game currently has a “mixed” review score on Steam. “This game is absolutely amazing – but has the worst optimisation I’ve ever seen,” wrote one fan. “How does a game manage to run perfectly fine in the Open Beta but the product that costs ACTUAL MONEY runs like absolute sludge,” said another.
In other news, Pokémon boss Tsunekazu Ishihara believes the long-running series of games, television shows, movies and trading cards will continue for the next 70 years.
