Neil Young, Joan Baez, Maggie Rogers jam to ‘Rockin’ in The Free World’ at Bernie Sanders rally

Neil Young, Joan Baez and Maggie Rogers have teamed up to perform ‘Rockin’ in The Free World’ at Bernie Sanders’ Fighting Oligarchy rally – watch footage of the performance below.

On Saturday (April 12), Young, Baez and Rogers all took turns performing at Bernie Sanders’ and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s anti-oligarchy event at Los Angeles’ Grand Park. Neil Young served as the rally’s final performer, beginning his two-song set with his 2019 song ‘Rainbow of Colours’.

Afterwards, he kicked into ‘Rockin’ In The Free World’, for which Joan Baez and Maggie Rogers appeared onstage mid-song to join him, leading “power to the people” and “take America back” chants between verses.

Elsewhere during the rally, Joan Baez performed five songs, all of which were covers. She kicked off with The Freedom Singers’ American civil rights era anthem ‘Ain’t Nobody Gonna Turn Me ‘Round’, followed by Phil Och’s ‘There But For Fortune’ and John Lennon‘s ‘Imagine’.

She ended her set with ‘America The Beautiful’, and Bob Dylan‘s ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right’ – Maggie Rogers joined her for both songs.

Rogers then began her own set, performing ‘Different Kind of World’, ‘Light On’ and ‘Alaska’.

Much like Bernie Sanders, Neil Young has been a vocal critic of billionaire President Donald Trump in recent years, calling him “the worst president in the history [of] our great country”. Back in 2020, he filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Trump over his usage of his song ‘Rockin’ In The Free World’, and shared multiple open letters on his website condemning the former President’s continued unauthorised use of his music.

Last year, he granted Kamala Harris’s running mate Tim Walz permission to use the song in his own campaign to be Vice President.

In a few short months, Young is set to return to the UK and Europe as part of his ‘Love Earth’ world tour with the Chrome Hearts. This includes a bill-topping set at Glastonbury Festival in late June, and a headline slot at BST Hyde Park the following month. In August, he’s due to return to the US for a run of North American tour dates.

However, the Canadian folk legend recently questioned if he’ll be able to re-enter the United States when the European tour wraps, due to his many criticisms of President. This comes after the Trump administration has deported and detained several immigrants over their political views, including pro-Palestine activists, as well as those backing Ukraine over Russia.

“That’s right folks,” he wrote on his blog. “If you say anything bad about Trump or his administration, you may be barred from re-entering USA. If you are Canadian, if you are a dual citizen like me, who knows? We’ll all find that out together.”
