Netflix has shared a new trailer for its upcoming period action film Uprising, led by Gang Dong-won (Peninsula, Broker) and Park Jeong-min (The 8 Show). Read on for everything you need to know about the upcoming movie.

What is the plot of Uprising?

Set during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty, Uprising follows the journey and conflict between two childhood companions – a master and servant – who face one another on opposite sides of a war as adults.

Set in the late 16th century, during Korea’s famed Joseon Dynasty, Uprising centres Jong-ryeo, the only son of the most powerful military family of the era. Having grown up with his direct servant Cheon-young, both characters come to a head when the Japanese begin to invade and colonise Joseon. King Seonjo flees to the north while the people of Joseon form a rebellion, which the king later calls traitors.

Jong-ryeo, who becomes a soldier on the king’s side, is faced with a more personal challenge when he faces his old friend and new adversary Cheon-young, who is an excellent swordsman part of the Joseon rebellion.

Who is in the cast of Uprising?

Park Jeong-min will star as Jong-ryeo, the master, and Gang Dong-won as Cheon-young, the servant.

Others starring in Uprising include Hellbound breakout star Kim Shin-rock, Jin Sun-kyu (The Uncanny Counter), Jung Sung-il (The Glory) and Cha Seung-won (One Ordinary Day, The Tyrant).

Meanwhile, the film will be helmed by Decision to Leave director Park Chan-wook.

Is there a trailer for the upcoming Netflix film?

On October 2, the streaming platform released an official trailer for the film a little over a week ahead of its premiere. The clip starts with high-octane scenes of swordsmen fighting, while a voice asks if a king and a slave are “equal”. The trailer wastes no time diving into the violence and brutality of the Japanese invasion of Joseon, where both Jong-ryeo and Cheon-young as adults end up coming to blows in the midst of the chaos.

On September 10, Netflix revealed a teaser trailer for Uprising. The trailer opens by introducing the friendship between the two boys as children and later teenagers, often practicing their sparring. However, Jong-ryeo appears to betray Cheon-young in adulthood, going back on his promise to emancipate the latter from slavery.

Later, the pair meet on the battlefield, this time sparring to draw blood. “A dog that bites its master must be put to death,” Jong-ryeo narrates.

How to watch Uprising?

Uprising will premiere globally exclusively on Netflix on October 11.
