NewJeans claim ADOR is trying to ban the group from carrying out “musical activities”
NewJeans (also known as NJZ) have claimed that music label ADOR is trying to ban the group from carrying out “musical activities” amid their legal feud.
NewJeans released a statement today on Instagram today (March 6), where the group claimed that on February 11, ADOR had expanded the scope of its injunction request. The injunction was first filed in December 2024 to verify the validity of its contracts with NewJeans to “ensure its continued legal enforcement”. In January, the company filed another injunction to prevent NJZ from signing brand deals as independent artists.
According to the K-pop girl group, the expansion of ADOR’s injunction now includes a request for the court to ban the quintet from “not just advertising, but also all musical activities, including NJZ’s writing, composing, performing, and singing, and all other ancillary activities”, according to the statement.
The band claim that this new request came shortly after they publicly accused that HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk attempted to cancel their upcoming performance at ComplexCon Hong Kong. The group say they “suspect that the decision was taken in retaliation for the failed attempt to cancel the performance”.
NewJeans also allege that ADOR “did not reveal its request for an injunction was aimed at banning all entertainment activities” until a few days ago. “ADOR is apparently only questioning NJZ’s advertising activities and claiming that it wants to avoid confusion between fans and advertisers, but in reality it is asking the court to ban all of NJZ’s entertainment activities,” they wrote.
“This appears to be an attempt to infringe on NJZ’s professional freedom and at the same time avoid public condemnation by not disclosing it publicly. The essence of NJZ is musical activity, and limiting it is tantamount to denying the very reason for NJZ’s existence. ADOR filed a preliminary injunction to block all NJZ activities from the outset.”
When asked for comment, ADOR told NME that it “felt it was necessary to extend the scope of the injunction due to the unilateral expansion of NewJeans members’ activities, including new music releases and overseas performances”.
The HYBE subsidiary emphasised that its aim is “to ensure that they can continue their activities under our existing contractual agreement”, rather than “hinder the artists’ careers”. It also reiterated its previous denial of its alleged attempt to cancel the group’s ComplexCon set, saying the extension of its injunction was not a “retaliatory measure”.
“We look forward to tomorrow’s court hearing where we will address any misunderstandings and seek a ruling confirming our position as the management agency for NewJeans, a decision that many of ADOR employees have been waiting for,” the statement to NME concluded.
