The video for ‘Supernatural’ plays out like an episode of a ’90s TV series, featuring opening credits and a teaser for an upcoming episode at the end. Additionally, member Hyein, who previously sustained a foot injury, is substituted with a masked dancer during most choreography scenes.
“I don’t know what we’ve done / I don’t want to go back / I already know / Don’t know what we’ve been sold / I’ll find out / So it’s sure,” the girl group sing on ‘Supernatural’. The song notably samples the 2009 song ‘Back of My Mind’ by Pharrell Williams and Manami, per Yonhap News Agency.
Speaking about the song in a press release, NewJeans said that they are “really excited and happy to make our Japanese debut” and that it “feels like we’re opening a new chapter”. Aside from ‘Supernatural’, the single also features the B-side track ‘Right Now’ as well as instrumental versions of both songs.
Last month, NewJeans dropped their latest Korean single ‘How Sweet’, which also featured the B-side ‘Bubble Gum’. In a mixed three-star review of the tracks, NME‘s Tássia Assis said that while the songs were a “lukewarm addition” to their discography, calling them “perfectly good” but lacking the “effervescent impact” of their previous releases.
The release of ‘Supernatural’ also comes amid an increasingly heated feud between ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin and HYBE over the ownership of the NewJeans label. The girl group have since voiced their support for Min during an appearance on popular South Korean music chart show Music Bank.
