Nintendo fans furious about “insane” Switch 2 price: “This is robbery”

Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo revealed more details about the Switch 2 yesterday (April 3) but fans aren’t happy about the price.

During the hour-long Direct presentation, Nintendo shared the technical specifications of the bigger, more powerful console and revealed a number of games that would be available at launch. A number of existing Switch games will also receive special upgrades on the new console.

The Switch 2 will also introduce the new Gamechat feature, allowing you to communicate with your mates while playing, while a new GameShare mechanic will let you play multiplayer games using only one cartridge. Switch 2 players will also be able to lend their games to other players for a limited time.

The Switch 2 will be released June 5 but details about price and pre-order weren’t revealed during the stream. However Nintendo later revealed via its website that the Switch 2 will cost £395.99 while a physical copy of Mario Kart World will set you back £74.99. New 3D platformer Donkey Kong Bananza will cost £66.99 while a digital-only version of the game is priced at £58.99. Pre-orders open April 9.

“The price is absolutely ridiculous,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “I’m totally fine with the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 console, it seems like a reasonable price for a new gaming system, however the price of everything else is an issue.”

“Wow, way to kill ALL momentum and hype for the Switch 2. I feel ZERO remorse in emulating. This is literal robbery,” another fan wrote on X. “Switch 2 is like a reverse PS3 where instead of being a horrifyingly overpriced console with no games at launch, it’s a moderately priced console with loads of games that are all horrifyingly overpriced,” added another.

“I genuinely think the Switch 2 is going to be a generational FLOP for Nintendo. These price tags have created such negativity around its release that I’m actually flabbergasted. They fucked this up BAD,” said someone else.

It comes after rumours that Rockstar was planning on charging $100 (£76) for Grand Theft Auto 6 when it launches later this year.

In other news, Square Enix has launched a new website for Final Fantasy 9 to celebrate the game’s upcoming 25th anniversary – and fans are convinced a remake is coming.
