Noel Gallagher: “I’m not an England fan, I’m Irish”

Noel Gallagher has revealed where his allegiances lie away from his hometown, saying that he is “not an England fan”.

The moment took place as the High Flying Birds singer and former Oasis member celebrated Manchester City winning the Premier League title at Etihad Stadium on Sunday (May 19).

After the game, the Britpop legend spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about the win on the day, and revealed that although he has been a lifelong supporter of Man City, that doesn’t mean he has allegiance to the England team.

“It means we are now out on our own as, you know, the greatest club side in England,” he told the outlet, recalling the significance of the win over the weekend. “No one’s done four [titles] in a row. It puts us above Liverpool, Man United, and Arsenal – and much deserved. It’s been a great season, and we’re not even at our best apparently!”

He went on to share his appreciation for the Man City midfielder Phil Foden, who scored two goals against West Ham during the match, and added: “When you need an early goal, right?, and you get one and it’s one of your own, you know the gods are with you.”

Wrapping up the interview, the host asked Gallagher if he cares about how Foden plays later this summer, as he takes to the field representing England at the Euros.

“I’m not an England fan, I’m Irish,” he replied, before saying “Good night!” and walking away.

This isn’t the first time that Noel Gallagher has made headlines for his support of Manchester City lately – just last week the singer, songwriter and guitarist defended not joining in with the Poznan at Man City’s match against Fulham, after his brother Liam called it “poor behaviour”.

At the away game on May 11, the team took home a 4-0 win, but unlike the huge sea of Man City fans surrounding him, Gallagher refused to join in with the Poznan (where supporters link arms, turn away from the pitch and begin bouncing).

“I have to say, in my defence, on Saturday I was still feeling the effects of a rather spectacular night out,” he said, supporting his reasoning after facing backlash from his sibling.

Elsewhere, Gallagher recently revealed that he had “scrapped” his plans for an acoustic album, and said that he plans “to make a defiant rock record” instead.

More recently, he joined The Black Keys live on stage at the O2 Academy Brixton in London, after contributing to the duo’s latest album ‘Ohio Players’, and also created a playlist spanning Paul Weller’s entire career filled with “two hours of music, anecdotes, and impressions”.
