Perrie Edwards teases new song about a past friendship: “It’s a really sad song”
Perrie Edwards has hinted at an emotional upcoming song that will explore a past friendship.
In an interview with the Zach Sang Show, Edwards revealed that her forthcoming debut solo album includes a track about a former friendship. “I can’t even listen to that song without crying,” she said. “It is about them and how, just no matter what, we didn’t see eye to eye. There was no communicating there, it’s a really sad song.
“I hope one day we can connect again and it can be good, but right now it’s just not, it wasn’t good.”
Edwards said she was open to reconnecting with the song’s subject but didn’t know if they would be once they hear the track, as she’s “been very honest about the situation”. She also explained that the track includes some “home truths” about the person, saying: “Maybe it will help that person grow.”
After 11 years in Little Mix, Edwards embarked on her solo career earlier this year, releasing her debut single ‘Forget About Us’ in April. She co-wrote the song, which reached the top 10 in the UK Official Charts, alongside Ed Sheeran, David Hodges (Kelly Clarkson, Christina Perri) and Steven Solomon. Speaking to NME prior to its release, Edwards described the track as “anthemic – driving in the car with the roof down in the wind.”
The album will also includes collaboration with Raye, who Edwards recently said was “the most talented human I’ve ever witnessed in the flesh.”
“Every time I see her win an award or anything happens to her, I am so happy because she just deserves to win – she’s the nicest, most genuine person, but her talent is ridiculous,” she told NME.
Edwards first found fame in 2011, after winning The X Factor in 2011 as part of the girl group Little Mix. In 2021 they announced they’d be taking “a little break”, following a decade together, in order to focus on solo projects.
Prior to the announcement of their hiatus, Jesy Nelson left the group to embark on her own solo career, releasing ‘Boyz’, featuring Nicki Minaj. The track sparked controversy online due to Nelson being accused of blackfishing in the music video.
The remaining members – Leigh-Ann Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall – have all begun releasing solo projects. Pinnock took on an acting role in the Christmas movie Boxing Day, before signing to Warner Records. Thirlwall signed a global deal with RCA Records after writing songs for the likes of TWICE (‘First Time’), Iggy Azalea and Britney Spears (‘Pretty Girls’).
Edwards has also hinted to NME that fans can expect some live shows in the next year, though she admitted the idea of performing solo is still daunting, saying: “I’m going to be terrified, don’t get me wrong, but it’s going to be epic.”
