PlayStation fans aren’t happy that the PS5 is getting more expensive: “It’s greed across the board”

Sony has confirmed the PlayStation 5 will be getting more expensive in a number of countries around the world, and fans aren’t impressed.

Earlier this week, Sony shared a short blog confirming that the PS5’s price is set to “rise” in The UK, Europe, Australia, Middle East, Africa and New Zealand.

“With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, [we] have made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price of the PlayStation 5 console,” the post explained.

In the UK, the PS5 Digital Edition will now cost £429.99 (an increase of £40) while European gamers will have to pay €50 more. Sony has announced the separate disc drive –which can be used alongside the Digital Edition of the PS5 to play physical games – will be reduced from £99.99 to £69.99 in the UK, with other countries seeing a similar discount.

However some fans are furious about the new changes.

“A console going up in price five years after launch? Lmfao,” wrote one fan on Reddit. “It’s greed across the board,” said another.

“I was actually thinking about finally picking up [a PS5] but I’m still fine with my PS4,” wrote a third fan, but earlier this year, Sony confirmed it’s PlayStation Plus service would be “shifting its focus” to the PS5 at the start of next year, suggesting support for the PlayStation 4 will start winding down in the coming months.

Other fans have pointed out that the USA isn’t being affected by the price increase, despite Donald Trump’s controversial new import tariffs that will add between 10 and 104 per cent to the cost of goods. The new measures have seen Nintendo delay pre-orders of the Switch 2 in the country due to the rapidly changing situation.

“This very much feels like making everyone else pay for US tariffs,” wrote one frustrated PlayStation fan. “Essentially they’re charging Europeans more so they don’t have to charge Americans as much,” said another. “Game companies making excuses to raise prices in regions that aren’t even affected by tariffs,” added a third.

At the end of 2023, Sony increased the price of its PlayStation Plus service and last year was heavily criticised for the £700 price tag of the PS5 Pro.

Meanwhile Nintendo has received a lot of backlash over the “variable” price of games for the Switch 2, with Mario Kart World set to cost fans £74.99. Defending the cost, Nintendo exec Doug Bowser said: “We’ll look at each game, really look at the development that’s gone into the game, the breadth and depth of the gameplay, if you will, the durability over time and the repeatability of gameplay experiences.”

In other news, the director of the new Minecraft movie has said “it’s weird” that the police are being called to rowdy screenings of the film.
