‘Pokémon’ is releasing a new mobile game – and fans are very excited

The Pokémon Company has confirmed details of a new mobile game, Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket.

Pokémon TCG Pocket is a mobile app designed for more “casual” players of the traditional card game.

To play, users will simply need to open a virtual booster pack and collect the cards inside. Players will be able to open two free booster packs a day with the goal, as always, to collect ‘em all. The cards will feature a mix of classic and new illustrations, alongside 3d and immersive variants and eventually, players will be able to trade their cards with other players, but that’ll come as part of a post-launch update.

Players will also be able to open booster packs more frequently using in-game currency Poke gold, which can be purchased for physical world money.

As well as collecting, Pokémon TCG Pocket users will also be able to build decks and battle players around the world. “The rules have been simplified so even those that have never played the Pokémon Trading Card Game can start battling,” explained a gameplay trailer, with decks consisting of 20 cards instead of 60.

Pokémon TCG Pocket will be soft launched in New Zealand next week (September 26) before a global launch on October 30.

Speaking to IGN, The Pokémon Company’s executive corporate officer Keita Hirobe explained that the point of TCG Pocket is to “focus on the fun of opening packs and collecting cards” as well as gently introducing players to the official card game.

“I played Pokémon TCG Pocket and I regret to inform you that it is both a fantastic game for Pokémon card collectors and a horrifyingly deep dark pit to throw all your money into. I can’t wait,” said The Gamer’s Eric Switzer with others describing it as “Marvel Snap but cute”.

Earlier this week, The Pokémon Company announced that it, alongside Nintendo, had filed a lawsuit against Palworld over “multiple patent infringements”, with developer Pocketpair saying it was working on “appropriate legal proceedings”.

In other news, the creator of the “This is fine” dog meme has confirmed he’s spinning it into a video game titled This is Fine: Maximum Cope.
