Priyanka Chopra Jonas says ‘Citadel’ was the first time she ever received equal pay
Priyanka Chopra Jonas has said that her role in Citadel was the first time she ever received the same pay as her male co-star.
The actress is currently shooting the show’s second season – in which she plays spy agent Nadia Sinh – in the UK opposite Richard Madden, who stars in the role of fellow agent Mason Kane. At the time of its first season, Citadel was reported to be the second most expensive TV show ever made.
Although Chopra Jonas is one of the highest-paid actresses in India, she revealed that she’d gone her whole career without pay parity until appearing in that show.
“I have to say that it was the first time in my career that I received pay parity. It was not something I even thought was possible,” she said. “Did it happen because the head of the studio was female? Maybe”.
Chopra Jonas also discussed wanting to be seen as more than just a love interest in a project. “For me, it was very different, you know, daring to say that I wanted to be able, as an Indian actor, to play leads in commercial entertainment and English language entertainment.”
“When I started doing this, 10 or 12 years ago, very few people had done it, and still there are very few people who are continuing to do so.”
The second season of Citadel is due for release next year.
In a four-star review of Citadel, NME wrote: “Light and funny without being too quippy, the show skims the surface with serious style and money. Years ago, this would have been another 24, Spooks or Prison Break, but Amazon’s bottomless budget now squeezes the TV action series into a fancy new suit that it wears well.”
