Ratbag shares darkly hedonistic new single ‘Juliet & Juliet’

Ratbag has returned with the darkly hedonistic new single ‘Juliet & Juliet’ – check out the song and its video below.

The Auckland indie musician – real name Sophie Brown – was recently named as one of the NME 100 for 2025, the ultimate guide to the essential emerging artists for the year ahead.

Ratbag has a major project to come later in 2025, and now they have teased it with the latest single ‘Juliet & Juliet’, which tells the tale of a messy night out with your partner or one of your closest friends.

Juliet, I like your nose ring / Would you care to rip it out / And put it on my fourth finger now”, Brown sings, an example of the dark glamour running through the track. Watch the video here:

Speaking about the track, Ratbag has said: “‘Juliet & Juliet’ is about that feeling you get when you’re with your partner in crime. romantic or not, they’re that one person who just gets you and can make any night better by just existing. think of it as a tribute to all the Juliets out there.”

The song follows on from January single ‘Look What You’re Doing To Me’, with Ratbag also set to hit the road around the world this year. They were recently announced to be playing at Iceland Airwaves in Reykjavik in November, with more announcements to come.

NME spoke to Brown in 2023 about the inspiration for her project’s name. “In New Zealand, it’s a mischievous kid who doesn’t follow the rules, who doesn’t behave,” she explained. “I used to draw on walls, I was that kid unfortunately. I know how to get on people’s nerves.”

Read NME’s Breakout interview with Ratbag here, where Brown discussed the multimedia fictional Gorillaz-style band that she created for the project, as well as her dreams for the future of Ratbag.
