Robert Pattinson doesn’t get the continual Twilight hate: “Are you still stuck on that shit?”

Robert Pattinson is surprised people are still criticising Twilight almost 20 years after the first film came out.

The actor shot to fame as vampire Edward Cullen in the five-film franchise, based on Stephenie Meyer’s successful YA novel series, making him a teen heartthrob in the process. Pattinson’s notoriety was boosted by his romantic relationship with his co-star Kirsten Stewart – who portrayed Bella Swan – who he dated between 2009 and 2012. They then reconciled but broke up again in 2013.

The franchise was enormously successful at the box office but polarised both critics and fans. Some believe the series has also aged poorly because Bella and Edward’s relationship could be seen as toxic.

Almost 20 years later, Pattinson has questioned why people haven’t moved on from the Twilight franchise.

“I love that people keep telling me, ‘Man, Twilight ruined the vampire genre,'” he told GQ Spain (translated by GamesRadar+). “Are you still stuck on that shit? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.”

Ironically, Pattinson recently told the New York Times that a stranger once asked why he stopped acting after appearing in the Twilight franchise, even though he has appeared in Christopher Nolan‘s Tenet and the titular role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

Pattinson said he wasn’t sure how to respond adding: “I was like …, ‘I’m Batman?’. She just laughed.”

Pattinson will next star in the upcoming Bong Joon-ho-directed sci-fi black comedy film Mickey 17.

The movie was recently delayed by three months, moving from its January 31 release to April 18, 2025.

Pattinson’s upcoming project The Batman 2 has also been delayed. Last month, it was announced that the much-anticipated sequel had been pushed back another year, with a new release date of October 1, 2027.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn defended the now five-year gap between the two films, saying such a gap between films is “fairly common”.
