“Rowdy” teens thrown out of ‘Minecraft’ screening after allegedly body-slamming cinema employee
A large group of “rowdy” teenagers were thrown out of screening of A Minecraft Movie after allegedly body-slamming a cinema employee.
The film adaptation of the popular video game has become a box office hit, enjoying the biggest opening weekend since Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine last July.
But there have been reports of raucous behaviour at several screenings, resulting in reactions such as loud cheering and shouting, or throwing popcorn at the screen.
One cinema in the UK also recently issued a warning to those attending screenings of the movie.
Now, further disruption has been reported at a screening in Wasilla, in Alaska, where five police officers responded to a call from the cinema manager, according to local police spokeswoman Amanda Graham (via the Anchorage Daily News).
The manager said a large group of teenagers were being “rowdy,” Graham said before adding: “And then they requested that we escort them out.” She said officers described about 15 young people being involved in the incident.
A brief TikTok video was posted online showing two Wasilla Police Department officers standing in front of the movie as the lights come up with one officer heard saying: “The guys in the back that body-slammed an employee … all of you guys are not welcome here any more.”
Asked about that incident in particular, Graham said no charges were filed and all of the cinema employees said they were “satisfied that everything was taken care of.” The cinema manager has yet to publicly comment on the incident.
Despite its poor critical reception the film has already pulled in $940million (£729.1million) worldwide.
NME’s two star review of A Minecraft Movie said the film “feels more like an advert for the game rather than a celebration of what makes it great. There is just enough in the brisk 101-minute runtime to inspire newcomers to check out The Overworld for themselves but you’d think a film about the awesome power of creativity would be a bit more innovative”.
