Rüfüs Du Sol, Flume, Amyl and The Sniffers Lead 2022 ARIA Awards Nominations
Rüfüs Du Sol can add up to seven ARIA Awards to their growing collection of trophies, when the annual ceremony is presented next month in Sydney.
The electronic duo of Jon George, James Hunt and Tyrone Lindqvist leads all artists with seven nominations heading into the 2022 ARIAs, including nods for best group and best album for 2021’s Surrender (Rose Avenue Records/Warner Music), the band’s fourth LP, and third leader on the ARIA Chart.
The Sydney outfit honed Surrender during lockdown stints between Joshua Tree and Los Angeles. When restrictions lifted, the trio performed works from it at three sold-out headline shows at Banc of California Stadium in L.A., and Surrender track “Alive” won the Grammy Award for best dance/electronic recording, their first Grammy. They’ve already collected four pointed ARIA trophies over the past decade.
Another Grammy winner in the hunt for a swag of ARIAs is Flume, with six chances, a tally equal with Aussie punk-rockers Amyl And The Sniffers.
Close behind is Baker Boy, Vance Joy and The Kid LAROI, each with five nominations, while Julia Jacklin, Gang Of Youths, King Stingray and Luude are each shortlisted four times.
“It is exciting that this year’s nominees again reflect a diverse, representative, and inclusive playing field for Aussie music – something we are committed to championing for years to come as we help more Australians connect with more local music,” comments ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd.
The Australian recording industry’s flagship ceremony is locked in for Nov. 24 at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, for what will be the first live and in-person ceremony since 2019, prior to the pandemic.
“Congratulations to all the incredible artists recognized in this year’s nominations, and to everyone who has played a role in helping shape Aussie music over 2022,” adds Herd. “Your commitment, passion, talent and creativity is second to none. We can’t wait to celebrate with all of you live and, finally, in person this November in Sydney.”
On the night, winners in 27 categories will be announced, including the fan-voted best video, best Australian live act, song of the year, and most popular international act.
The shortlists for the 2022 ARIA Awards were announced Wednesday morning (Oct. 12) by way of a live stream on YouTube, the ongoing event partner.
During the feed, eight-time ARIA Award winner Natalie Imbruglia and Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi were named as co-hosts.
“Buzzing to be coming back over to Australia for the first time since 2020,” comments Capaldi, who will also perform on the night. “I’m pinning every single one of my hopes on winning an award as well because it’s very, very unlikely after hosting it I’m ever going to be invited back again, perhaps even into the country. Can’t wait to see you all soon.”
The ceremony will air live and across Australia on the free-to-air Channel 9 and its digital channel 9Now, and streamed globally across YouTube.
The 2022 ARIA Awards in partnership with YouTube are supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW.
