Barbie star Ryan Gosling is reportedly in talks to join the Star Wars universe, as part of a new film directed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy.

According to an article by The Hollywood Reporter, Gosling is in negotiations to appear in the movie, which has been in development since 2022. There are few details on the plot, but according to the outlet’s sources it is a standalone film that will not be connected to the main Skywalker Saga.

The piece also says that the project’s schedule would be bumped up if Gosling agrees to be involved, as the interest is a late development in the production and could see filming starting as early as autumn 2025.

Should the deal go through, it would be a rare example of A-list talent being cast as the lead in a Star Wars film. The Original Trilogy was a cast of unknowns made famous through the films’ success, while the Prequel and Sequel Trilogy’s leads, Hayden Christensen and Daisy Ridley, were not household names when they were announced.

While stars like Samuel L Jackson and Liam Neeson were cast in supporting roles, the Star Wars brand has always been the draw for audiences.

The next film in the Star Wars universe will The Mandalorian and Grogu, currently set for release on May 22, 2026. While there hasn’t been a big screen adventure since 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker, the franchise has continued on TV, with the recent finale of Skeleton Crew being warmly received by fans.

Gosling produced the recent horror Wolf Man, and is set to appear in sci-fi film Project Hail Mary in 2026. Recently, Saoirse Ronan reflected on the time she and Gosling almost worked together on 2009’s The Lovely Bones, saying she was “sad” the actor was fired from the movie.
