Ryan Gosling to star in new ‘Star Wars’ film ‘Starfighter’, set for release 2027

Ryan Gosling will star in a new Star Wars film, set to be released in 2027.

Following months of speculation, the news was unveiled yesterday (April 17) by Gosling and director Shawn Levy in Tokyo, Japan during Star Wars Celebration.

Star Wars: Starfighter is set five years after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker (2019), and will go into production this autumn before premiering on May 28 2027, exclusively in theatres.

Levly revealed that the film is “a standalone”, adding: “It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”

Gosling added, “The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

After the actor’s comments, a picture flashed on the screen of his childhood Star Wars bedsheets, which had been sent in by his mother.

“She still has them, obviously,” Gosling joked. “Naturally, she thought that it might be something that the fans would appreciate, but I suspect that she just sort of wants to justify years of hoarding.”

He added: “As you can see from the picture, I guess I was probably dreaming about Star Wars before I even saw the film. And it’s probably framed my idea of what a movie even was.”

Until now, the project, which has been written by Jonathan Tropper for the last two years, has been under wraps.

It has also been reported that Anora Oscar-winner Mikey Madison passed on a supporting role offer in the film.

Levy’s previous Disney film – Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine – became the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time, grossing $1.33 billion worldwide.

The next film in the Star Wars universe will The Mandalorian and Grogu, currently set for release on May 22, 2026. While there hasn’t been a big screen adventure since 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker, the franchise has continued on TV, with the recent finale of Skeleton Crew being warmly received by fans.

Gosling produced the recent horror Wolf Man, and is set to appear in sci-fi film Project Hail Mary in 2026. Recently, Saoirse Ronan reflected on the time she and Gosling almost worked together on 2009’s The Lovely Bonessaying she was “sad” the actor was fired from the movie.
