Sabrina Carpenter Says Toora Loora to London With Lively Cover of ‘Come On Eileen’
Sabrina Carpenter paid homage to a song that her parents probably rocked out to when she was not even a figment of their imaginations during her show at London’s O2 Arena on Sunday night in London. The 25-year-old singer busted out a sprightly, bouncy cover of English new wave band Dexy Midnight Runners’ 1983 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Come On Eileen” at the gig.
Complete with the original’s signature fiddle groove, Carpenter made the song her own, giving it her signature pop sheen as the enthusiastic crowd readily sang along to the beloved Birmingham-bred band’s iconic hit, down to the classic “toora, loora, toora, loo-rye-aye” refrain.
The cover wasn’t the only surprise during Carpenter’s run at the O2, where she continued the popular bit where she and her dancers scan the crowd before arresting a guest for being “too hot.” The lascivious lawbreaker in her sights on Saturday night was none other than the Spice Girls’ Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton. “You’re kind of spicing up my life a little bit,” she told the fellow pop icon, who re-shared the clip on Instagram, writing “Please, please, please Arrest me for being a fan!!! @sabrinacarpenter you were amazing.”
At the same show where she took on Dexys, Carpenter took actress Salma Hayek into custody, slapping the fuzzy pink handcuffs on the actress. “Oh my goodness. Who is this woman in the front?” Carpenter said after spotting Hayek. “I need some of that. For real. Wow, you are so gorgeous […] It’s crazy ’cause I just met you, but I’m already in love with you, and I feel like we’re kind of destined. I’m getting hot because you’re here.”
