Sam Smith reveals skiing accident left them unable to walk “for a month”
Sam Smith has revealed that they were recently in a skiing accident which left them immobilised for a month.
The revelation came up as the pop star appeared on the latest episode of the Sidetracked With Annie and Nick podcast, and opened up about a personal low that they experienced at the start of the year.
According to Smith, back in January they were involved in a freak skiing mishap which saw them tear their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
“I completely ripped my ACL. I was skiing. I was an idiot and went on a black slope on the second day … I got taken down in a blood bag. It was the worst,” they explained.
“It’s in between your bones and helps you jump and spring around, and it completely ripped,” Smith added, also detailing how some of the after-effects can become a permanent issue when it comes to mobility.
“I decided to go down the non-surgical route, but I couldn’t walk for a month on this leg and it was awful, it was the first time I’d ever not been able to move.”
As the interview progressed, the ‘Stay With Me’ singer explained that the injury also urged them to “get my shit together” and prioritise their health and wellbeing more than ever before.
“I was very anxious and had been struggling with anxiety for years, so, I started icing every morning, I started getting into my circadian rhythm,” they explained. “And a big part of that is light exposure to your eyes … in the evening, you stay off your phone and basically try to live by candlelight for last hour before you sleep.”

The discussion of their recent injury comes shortly after Smith revealed that they have re-recorded ‘Stay With Me’ to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
In a letter to their fans, the singer-songwriter revealed that the 2024 version of the hit song will follow in the veins of other tracks on their seminal debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’, which is being re-recorded from the ground up to mark 10 years since its release.
It is due for release on August 2, and you can pre-save the record on digital platforms now.
Smith also recently revealed that they turned down the opportunity to collaborate with Major Lazer on their song ‘Cold Water’, but was “happy I passed on it because Justin Bieber did it way better than what I would have done. It was made for him.”
