Savages’ Fay Milton announces debut Goddess album with haunting single ‘Shadows’

Savages‘ drummer Fay Milton has announced her debut album as Goddess and released the haunting new single ‘Shadows’. Check it out below.

Goddess is a new collaborative project curated and produced by Milton. The debut, self-titled album will be released on May 30 via Bella Union, and you can pre-order it here.

Alongside the album announcement, Goddess has shared the first single ‘Shadows’, which features vocals from Ex:RE – Elena Tonra of Daughter‘s solo project – as well as pianist Hinako Omori and Savages bassist Ayse Hassan.

Speaking about the song, Milton said: “What I love about this track is that it’s got this darkness and lightness at the same time. It’s got this real thunder and lightning energy. There’s a sparkly piano, very light and delicate, and then this noise bass that runs through it. Elena’s vocal is just completely exquisite, as well as her lyrics.”

Milton explained that Goddess stemmed “from the curiosity of what happens when you bring creative spirits together in interesting new combinations.”

“With this project, I have come out from behind the drums and stepped into the producer role, allowing the feminine energy to run strong from the start to the finish of the creative process”, she said.

It comes after Savages announced in 2016 that they would be “taking a break” to pursue other projects.

“Around the time that Savages went on hiatus, I started thinking about the climate crisis and realizing how existential it is,” Milton shared in a press release.

She formed Music Declares Emergency in 2019, which describes itself as “a group of artists, music industry professionals and organisations that stand together to declare a climate and ecological emergency and call for an immediate governmental response to protect all life on Earth.”

Their No Music On A Dead Planet campaign has been backed by the likes of Billie Eilish, The 1975, and Foals as well as having shirts designed by Thom Yorke, Joy Division artist Peter Saville and others. Since it was launched in 2019, hundreds bands and musicians have now signed up to Music Declares Emergency’s pledge to revitalise how the music industry tackles climate disaster, from Radiohead to RobynThe xxMassive Attack and many more.

Last year, the campaign launched a partnership with the BRIT Awards as part of the BRITs’ “long-term vision” to “constantly review, innovate and adapt to deliver the awards’ sustainability goals”

Speaking to NME in 2019, Milton stressed the urgency with which climate change needed to be responded to, particularly by the government.

“To use Greta Thunberg’s analogy, the house is on fire, and there isn’t time for whoever started the fire with their cigarette to quit smoking before saying the house is on fire – it’s on fire now, and we need to fix this,” she said.

Milton added: “Our government aren’t responding, and that’s a huge thing… People are getting used to the word ’emergency’, but we shouldn’t – it really, really is an emergency. Every single day that we’re not doing something, it’s putting the world in more danger.”
