Last month, speaking to NME‘s Alex Flood to promote her new film Emilia Perez, Selena Gomez said that she thought it was “really nice” focusing on acting. Now, she’s doubled down on that sentiment, explaining to fellow actor Saoirse Ronan for Variety‘s Actors on Actors that she thinks she might be “a little too old for the pop star life”.
During their chat, Ronan gave Gomez props for the balance between the latter’s acting and music personas and how different Gomez’s acting roles are from what other musicians-turned-actors take on.
Gomez responded to the praise: “That means a lot to me. I love storytelling, and my music career is separate. However, I don’t see that being a forever thing.” She went on to explain, briefly mentioning her producer boyfriend Benny Blanco: “I’ll always have music in my life because my partner’s a musician, and I love having moments to do it for fun. It can be a little vulnerable when you’re putting yourself out there versus escaping into a character.”
Selena Gomez then echoed her recent comments that while her “music isn’t going away”, she’s more than happy acting right now: “I definitely think my strong suit is probably acting. But one thing I’m proud of in music is being able to tell a story — my favorite songs are mostly ballads, and they’re very transparent and honest. But I think I might be a little too old for the pop-star life. I’m genuinely so happy to just be in this new era of my life, because in a lot of ways, it’s just the beginning.”
Her last album, ‘Rare‘, arrived in 2020. While Gomez first got her start as an actor on the Disney Channel before making the switch to music, she’s recently found a newfound passion for acting. In recent years, she’s received praised for her roles in Only Murders In The Building, for which she earned her first acting Emmy nomination earlier this year.
More recently, she’s starred in Emilia Perez alongside Zoe Saldaña. In a three-star review of the film, Sophia Butcher wrote for NME: “You’ve probably never seen a movie like Emilia Perez before – and whilst there is enough meat in the performances to make you somewhat glad you did, you might not want to again.”
