Self Esteem on her new album: “I’ve made it for stadiums. I think of those songwriting bands like Coldplay or Biffy Clyro”
Self Esteem has shared more details about her new album, revealing that she’s “made it for stadiums” inspired by the likes of Coldplay and Biffy Clyro.
In a new interview with Music Week, the musician (aka Rebecca Lucy Taylor) told the magazine about her forthcoming third album, ‘A Complicated Woman’. The record is expected to drop April 25.
Speaking to Music Week, Taylor shared: “I don’t know how the album’s going to get received, but then I’m also like, ‘I don’t give a fuck’, because I’ve made what I want to make. I think it’s going to be a massive challenge, being a 38, 39-year-old woman putting a pop record out and getting it where it needs to go.”
She also revealed the album’s sonic direction, saying that “I’ve made it for stadiums” and adding: “I think of those songwriting bands like Coldplay or Biffy Clyro that made amazing albums and then stayed big or got bigger. So I went for more sing-along stadium tropes. I mean, I fucked with them as much as I could and I enjoyed it.
“I’ve been saying, ‘This is the most commercial singing ever!’ and people say, ‘No, it’s still very alt!’”

In a previous interview with NME at the BRIT Awards 2022, Taylor told us she wanted her third album to be loaded with “Olympic opening ceremony euphoria”.
Then, at the Mercury Prize that year, Taylor confirmed she would still take that direction, replying: “Yeah, throw those curtains wide-y!,” before bursting into the chorus of ‘One Day Like This’ by Elbow.
“That’s what I’m gonna do!” she continued, saying: “I’m too busy and I haven’t had time to think about it, so it’s gonna be ages now. I’m just so busy being awarded things! It’s so hard being talented! It’s killing me! It’s still on the agenda but you never know!”
She will be going on tour throughout the UK and Ireland starting this September. Kicking off in Birmingham, she’ll travel through to Edinburgh, Newcastle, Glasgow, Dublin, Manchester, Bristol and Brighton.
There’ll also be two shows at the O2 Academy Brixton in London and a huge homecoming gig at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield. Get any remaining tickets here and see below for all dates:

She is currently performing the album’s “theatrical presentation” at the Duke of York’s Theatre, which was created by herself and Tony award-winning designer Tom Scutt.
The “unique” performance is described as “an ambitious quasi-theatrical experience that harnesses the power and energy of a gig but presents it through a theatrical format”.
