Fan of the show Severance have given a rapturous response to the latest episode of the show, with some calling it a “masterpiece”.

Focusing on Mark (Adam Scott) and Gemma (Dichen Lachman), the episode shows flashbacks chronicling their separation and reunion under the influence of memory severance technology. Gemma is revealed to be held in company Lumon’s basement testing floor, unaware of her past with Mark, who works in the same building.

The episode was directed by Canadian filmmaker Jessica Lee Gagné in her debut on the show, and one fan on X (formerly Twitter) was quick to celebrate her work.

“Round of applause for Jessica Lee Gagné, director of #Severance S2 Ep7, her directorial debut” they said, before adding: “Masterpiece – 10/10 – no notes”.

One found themselves profoundly moved by theme of loss in the episode.

“The parallel between mark finding out that gemma isn’t coming home and gemma wanting to come home to mark,” they posted, “This episode broke me”. Another fan exclaimed: “That episode of Severance was kinda the saddest thing i’ve ever watched in my life”.

Others have shared how the episode made them feel, with one writing: “Just sat and stared at my TV like this,” with a picture of a traumatised soldier, while another said: “This is what it felt like watching 2×07 of #severance” with a chaotic scene beneath the caption.

Some viewers have speculated what the episode might mean for the future of the story.

One speculated: “This feels like they’re trying to prep severance for the mass market. testing it out in everyday but painful scenarios until she can keep her tempers balanced doing each one”.

Another said: “That was our first actual exposure to gemma’s character but she feels like a long lost friend because of how intricately and lovingly she’s been woven into the narrative”.

Among the fan praise was a tweet from Ben Stiller, the show’s main director and producer, who wrote: “All praise for Jessica Lee Gagné, who makes imho a brilliant directorial debut”.

Severance cast member Christopher Walken recently spoke about his reluctance to retire, asking: “If I stop, what would I do?”. Elsewhere, rapper and actor Vince Staples has said he wants to be in the next season of the show.
