‘Severance’ fans react to the devastating finale choice: “God the tragedy of it all”

Severance season 2 episode 3

Spoilers for the final episode of Severance ahead!

Viewers have been sharing their thoughts on the action-packed final episode of Severance season two.

During the feature-length finale, the ‘innie’ version of Mark (Adam Scott) discovers the true nature of the mysterious project he has been working, as well as making a painful decision choosing between his wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman) and colleague Helly (Britt Lower), eventually leaving with Helly as choosing Gemma would lead to Mark’s ‘innie’ self ceasing to exist.

On X (formerly Twitter), one fan wrote: “That was a masterpiece. I loved it man. But god the tragedy of it all is so ughhh. It’s so sad for Gemma, she didn’t deserve to have that happen to her. But it was really the only choice for Innie Mark. He chose his own love in that moment, and you have to respect that”.

One viewer lamented the emotional switch of a scene where Mark is reunited with Gemma, knowing that he would have to make the decision to leave after. “Severance is twisted for giving the audience this incredible, gut wrenching, happy moment to only take it few moments later for another incredible gut wrenching reunion” they said, before adding “I feel sick”.

Another viewer pointed out the visual parallels in the season’s storytelling. “I simply can’t emotionally process the significance of Mark S running through the hallways of Lumon by himself at the start of the season to try to find Ms. Casey for his outie & then now making the choice to forego Gemma & run through the halls with Helly by his side”.

One fan of the Mark/Helly connection was excited by his decision, saying: “MARKHELLY IS THE HEART OF SEVERANCE” and “THE FINAL SCENE WAS AMAZING, I LOVE MY COUPLE SO MUCH!!”

Another pondered the return of the characters for the next season, saying: “when the severance season 2 finale ends like this”.

The episode, titled Cold Harbour, was confirmed earlier this month as the longest by far in the show’s run. For details of when you can expect season three, click here.
