‘Silent Hill 2 Remake’ easter egg confirms long-running fan theory about time loops

The Silent Hill 2 Remakehas been out for just under a month, and one fan beleives they’ve proven a decades old fan theory.

For those unfamiliar, Silent Hill 2 takes protagonist James Sunderland into a creepy town that torments him at every turn. The game has several endings and developer Masahiro Ito has claimed they’re all canon.

As spotted by VG247, one Redditor believes they’ve discovered a hidden message within the remake’s photos. They explain, “If you count things within each photo (example, the open windows in photo 1 = 6), then count that number across the writing on each one, you will get a letter.”

You can check the Reddit post above if you want to see their working out, but the message spells out the words: “YOUVE BEEN HERE FOR TWO DECADES”. This would confirm a fan theory that James is stuck in a time loop, punishment for the way he treated his wife, Mary.

Bloober Team creative director and lead designer Mateusz Lenart wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “I knew it wouldn’t stay hidden for long! (There was a theory in our company that the puzzle might be too hard.”

Now, this doesn’t necessarily confirm the timeloop fan theory, it could just be a reference to the original game coming out over two decades ago, but it certainly adds to the credibility of the fan theory. When one fan replied, “The loop theory is canon”, Lenart responded, “Is it?” So, it’s definitely still down to you to interpret as you see fit.

As with lots of media, this may never have been the original intention, but the fan theory could have inspired the developers to retroactively make it more true. The original explanaiton of all endings being canon could also refer to the mental state of James, meaning he’s experiencing all the realities simultaneously.

In other news, Sony has confirmed all the 55 games that will be getting graphical upgrades on the PS5 Pro when it launches later this week.
