Ryan Coogler’s genre-blending vampire horror-thriller had a strong opening weekend over Easter, raking in $48million (£36million) in the United States and $77million (£58million) worldwide.
That success continued into its second weekend, with its gross worldwide box office takings now sitting at over $161million (£121million) – far surpassing its $90million (£68million) budget.
Set in 1930s Mississippi, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in two roles as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown to launch a new ‘juke joint’ and celebrate the best blues players in the area. Things take a turn on opening night, when a group of white musicians led by charming vampire Remmick (Jack O’Connell) crash the party.

It also stars Hailee Steinfeld (who recorded a new song for the soundtrack), Loki’s Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo (who recently spoke out about his input on Marvel’s indefinitely delayed Blade reboot), and newcomer Miles Caton.
Sinners is the fifth collaboration between writer-director Coogler and Jordan, who previously worked together on acclaimed drama Fruitvale Station, the Creed franchise and MCU behemoth Black Panther.
The film’s box office success comes after it has been a hit with critics and audiences alike, with its Rotten Tomatoes scores currently sitting at 98% and 97% respectively.

It bagged a four-star review from NME, with James Mottram writing: “Sinners really comes to life via the musical numbers. Coogler’s longterm creative partner Ludwig Göransson, who won an Oscar for crafting Black Panther’s music, conjures up a masterful, blues-soaked score. Coogler uses it to prove just how influential the genre is via a spellbinding sequence that tracks through the juke joint, whirling around Preacher Boy and showcasing a hip-hop DJ, an MC and an electric guitarist.”
Coogler and Göransson spoke to NME recently about Sinners and their ongoing creative relationship, with Coogler saying that the aim of the film was to “give people a unique, visceral movie experience.”
The director has also confirmed that his next project will be a reboot of The X-Files, teasing that “some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really fucking scary”.
