‘Slow Horses’ season four ending explained: what happened to Frank Harkness?
Four seasons later, Slow Horses has become one of the biggest shows on Apple TV+.
Created by Will Smith, the spy thriller series follows Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) as the head of Slough House, an administrative purgatory for rejected MI5 agents.
Other cast members include Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sophie Okenedo, Jonathan Pryce, and Hugo Weaving.
The series, based on the novels by Mick Herron, is set to return for a fifth season next year. Apple TV has also renewed the show for a sixth season.
What happened to Frank in the Slow Horses season 4 finale?
Following the ambush in the previous episode, River (Jack Lowden) is brought to a bar to meet Frank (Hugo Weaving). During this confrontation, it is revealed that Frank is River’s father, something the latter realised based on birthday cards he’d been sent as a child.
River manages to call for back-up, which results in a stand-off outside the bar between police officers and Frank, who is holding a gun to River’s head. Frank manages to escape, however, by sticking a grenade in River’s jacket and shoving him towards the group, causing panic.
A chase takes place through St Pancras station, where River finds Frank hiding in plain sight at a nearby bar within the station. Impressed by his son’s ability to track him down, Frank gives himself up to the authorities.
After his arrest, a cocky Frank is interrogated by Diana (Kristin Scott Thomas) where he reveals that he has a plan to get out of the situation.
Later in the episode, Diana meets Jackson (Gary Oldman) and shows her a bunch of letters addressed to the heads of the intelligent services. These letters expose the fact that MI5 repeatedly used Frank’s services to do its “dirty work” over the years, and unless Frank was released within 12 hours, they’d be published online for the world to see.
While we don’t see Frank being released in the episode, the letters suggest he has been, or soon will be, set free.
Who died in the season four finale?
The biggest casualty was Marcus (Kadiff Kirwan), who was killed in the attack on Slough House by Frank’s son, Patrice Harkness (Tom Wozniczka).
The other death was Patrice himself. After being captured and tied to a radiator by the Slough House members, Patrice was shot and killed by J.K Coe (Tom Brooke).
