SM Entertainment to debut first AI idol named nævis in September
K-pop entertainment giant SM Entertainment has announced the upcoming debut of its first AI-generated singer, named nævis, next month.
Today (August 21), SM Entertainment released the first official teaser clip and launched a website for nævis’s upcoming debut. The former features rows of computer code, reading “nævis is coming to the real world”, before revealing her silhouette.
SM Entertainment has yet to release details on nævis’s debut such as a release date and track list. However, an additional video is also set to drop this Friday (August 23).
According to the entertainment agency per KoreaJoongAngDaily, the virtual K-pop idol was created using computer graphics and AI voicing technologies, while her upcoming content will be produced using generative AI.
nævis was first introduced in the music videos and lyrics of K-pop girl group aespa, as part of their fictional sci-fi inspired universe. In the group’s lore, nævis is an entity that helps the members traverse from the real world to the wild, uncharted digital dimension called Kwangya.
Her voice was featured for the first time on their song ‘Welcome to MY World’, which acted as the pre-release single to their third mini-album ‘My World’ in May 2023. She also made a surprise appearance at aespa’s SYNK: Parallel Line concert in Seoul back in June.
In other K-pop news, rookie girl group YOUNG POSSE have made a comeback with their third mini-album ‘Ate That’ and a music video for its lead single of the same name. The record marks their second release of 2024, following their second mini-album ‘XXL’ in March.
