Snoop Dogg says Dr. Dre has “always been a big brother” to him
Snoop Dogg has opened up about his relationship with Dr. Dre, sharing that the latter has “always been a big brother” to him.
Both of the iconic hip-hop figures appeared as guests on Capital XTRA Breakfast with hosts Robert Bruce and Shayna Marie. During their chat, Bruce asked Snoop about what his friendship with Dre had taught him in life or in general.
‘The Next Episode’ rapper shared that his friendship with the rapper and producer “taught me how to be professional. Because Dr. Dre has like always been a big brother, a mentor. But he taught me professionalism as far as how to separate from the hood and how to, you know, get on a business venture, and just look forward and not really pay attention to wants behind you.
“He’s always had the attitude and spirit of ‘I don’t care about what I’ve made, it’s all about what I’m about to make.’ And that’s a good spirit that I’ve taken from him that I don’t even know how many albums I’ve made since I started, but it’s always about what’s next, what’s best. And just being with him, he’s like a big brother, protector. I just love being with him in the studio and in real life.”
He went on to explain that the best thing about working with Dre is that “he’s in control. And I say that, and I really mean that, because outside of Dr. Dre, I’m like the boss; I’m the one who has to call the shots at creating, make sure and all this. It’s demanding when you have to do it all and be it all. When I’m with him, I can just be an artist, I can just be Snoop Dogg.”
“Yeah, Snoop can get in the passenger seat when he’s with me, and he’s real comfortable,” Dre added. “It takes a massive amount of trust to be in this position to let somebody like Snoop and his calibre trust me with his shit. You know what I mean? That means I can fuck up. I love being in that seat, and I love that he gives me that trust with his career, and I’m never going to let my bro down.”
Elsewhere in the chat, the two Californian legends opened up about their love for London’s Brixton Academy and East London.
“We love London. It’s always a fantastic time. I’m not just saying that, we always have a great time,” shared Dre after being asked how the city was treating them.
“We really love, like, Brixton Academy. You know, we like the hood, like East London. Because that’s when we first came out here, they like really embraced us. So, it was like we always wanted to make sure that we, you know, kept our hands on this UK bridge over here,” added Snoop, with Dre continuing: “Yeah, my first time performing here was in Brixton. Brixton Academy, yeah. Years and years ago with N.W.A.”
Marie went on to ask Snoop about his first performance in the UK, to which he responded: “With Dr. Dre? We were there, Brixton Academy. Shabba Ranks was with us that night we came out here. That was my first time ever coming out here, and I didn’t know there was that many black people out here. Like, you know, what they tell us in America they only show us certain pieces of the world. So when we came out here, we went straight to the Academy and there was like…”
“It was like Compton!” added Dre with Snoop sharing: “It felt like the hood!”
