Sofia Vergara wants to do a ‘Modern Family’ movie before Ed O’Neill dies
Sofia Vergara has said she would be open to doing a Modern Family movie, but only as long as co-star Ed O’Neill “doesn’t die”.
The Colombian-American actress, 52, played the trophy wife Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the hit ABC sitcom for all 11 seasons, alongside her on-screen husband O’Neill, 78.
Vergara told Variety that she would consider getting the Modern Family team back together, following the show’s conclusion in 2020.
“I’d die to be on that set,” she said. “It’d be so much fun. A TV movie, maybe?”
She did make clear that there would be one non-negotiable factor in her decision: O’Neill must be alive to see the day. “I always joke with him, ‘Ed, don’t die, because if we do the sequel, it will take some time, and you’re the oldest of us. You can’t be dead.”
At the start of the year, Vergara appeared to dismiss the possibility of a Modern Family reboot. During an appearance on the Tonight Show, she spoke about hosting a reunion party for the show’s cast and whether it made her want to team up with them again.
“No, it’s only been four years,” she said.
When asked how long would be appropriate, she responded: “I don’t know, but it doesn’t seem right. I feel like they need, we need a little more time.”
However, the actress also took the chance to quip about O’Neill’s age then too: “We don’t have much time because Ed is old, so…”
“We finished Modern Family in 2020, and you know, it was so emotional. We were all like ‘We have to be together a lot, we cannot just separate.’ And then, two weeks later, the pandemic hit. And so we didn’t see each other for almost four years until I did this house in November.”
Vergara has, meanwhile, been starring in Netflix series Griselda, about the Colombian drug dealer Griselda Blanco. In January, it was reported that the real-life family of Blanco were suing Vergara, claiming “unauthorised use” o image and likeness.
For O’Neill’s part, in January, he recalled how he could have ended up joining the mob before landing his role on the ABC sitcom.
“Youngstown [Ohio] was not a good place to live for opportunities. Really, there was nothing there for me,” he said. “The only thing that I had that I could’ve done – and thank God I didn’t – was organised crime because I had friends in organised crime.”
