Spike Lee shares first look at A$AP Rocky in ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
Spike Lee has shared the first glimpse of A$AP Rocky as the lead in his new film Highest 2 Lowest – check it out below.
Details of the film were announced in December, with the Apple TV+ production set to be a loose adaptation of the 1963 Akira Kurosawa thriller High And Low.
A$AP Rocky stars in the film alongside Denzel Washington and Ice Spice, and now we have our first look at him in character. He wears an orange prison jumpsuit in the image, which you can see in Lee’s Instagram post below.
“Good Morning,” Lee wrote on Wednesday (February 19). “Thanks To The Judge And Jury For The NOT GUILTY VERDICT. A$AP And DENZEL WASHINGTON Are In HIGHEST 2 LOWEST. DA New SPIKE LEE JOINT This SUMMER. And DAT’S DA” 40 ACRES AND A MULE” TRUTH, RUTH.,YA-DIG?”
As Lee referenced, the image is released just days after the rapper was found not guilty in his trial for a shooting incident in 2021. The Los Angeles jury acquitted him on all counts, after he had been charged for allegedly firing a gun at his former friend A$AP Relli. He had faced 24 years in prison and had turned down a plea deal for 180 days in jail.
According to a report from the LA Times, a loud roar erupted in the courtroom when the court clerk read out the jury’s verdict of not guilty. Among the first people to celebrate the verdict was Rocky’s partner Rihanna, who he rushed to for a hug. The LA Times reports that A$AP Rocky thanked the jury for “saving my life” following the verdict, adding that they “made the right decision”.
Highest 2 Lowest is Lee’s first feature film since 2020’s Da 5 Bloods, and stars Washington as a “music mogul with his own label and a reputation as the best ears in the business”.
Rocky, meanwhile, is also set to star in the upcoming A24 drama If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, which was a hit at this year’s Sundance Festival.
Elsewhere, Lee recently thanked Kendrick Lamar for referencing his production company 40 Acres And A Mule during his Super Bowl Halftime show.
