‘Star Wars Outlaws’ is dividing opinons, according to early reviews
Star Wars Outlaws finally releases this week, but a number of early reviews have given fans a taste of what to expect.
Created by Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft in collaboration with LucasFilm Games, Star Wars Outlaws sees players take on the role of Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix.
Set between the events of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, Outlaws has been described as the first proper open-world Star Wars games, with developers looking to create something different. And according to reviews, they’ve kinda succeeded.
A number of reviews have been published ahead of Outlaws’ release this Friday, August 30, with the scores ranging from two-stars to five-stars.
NME’s Mark Beaumont gave Outlaws a full five-stars, with the game combining the best elements of Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Witcher and Assassin’s Creed to create a “gloriously cohesive, uniquely Star Wars experience.”
Screen Rant praised the controls and gunplay in a four-star review, while in another four-star review, PlayStation Universe highlighted how good Outlaws actually looks, especially when there’s so much content in the open-world universe.
Elsewhere, PC Gamer gave it 73 per cent. “Star Wars Outlaws is both sides of Ubisoft: it’s conventional and safe in ways that really get on my nerves, but it’s also ambitious enough to be more than just a third-person shooter in a sandbox,” they wrote. GGRecon also found Outlaws to be a mixed bag, “where almost every good element is dragged down by a disappointing or restrictive other. Its narrative and main character are largely engaging and combat tools intriguing, but the surrounding elements expose the lack of depth in nearly every element,” they wrote in their three-star review.
Eurogamer described Outlaws as a “gateway” Star Wars game, aimed at newcomers to the series. However, they found fault with the repetitiveness of many of the missions, the emotional drive behind the narrative and the way several of the vehicles handle.
“The result is a series of quite painful comparisons: it lacks the branching, open stealth of an Arkham game, the systemic options of a Dishonored or the incisive, relentlessly satisfying speed of picking enemies off in Assassin’s Creed. It lacks the linear polish and charisma of Uncharted. Lacks the animation flow to its yellow-ledge platforming next to a Horizon, or the sheer joy of taking platforming and making it into an actual game in itself, as in Star Wars Jedi,” the two-star review read.
Overall, the general consensus seems to be that Star Wars Outlaws is very much a Ubisoft game, and players enjoyment will depend on how much they’ve enjoyed previous releases from the studio.
In other news, the latest expansion for PowerWash Simulator has been revealed, with players able to clean up the fantasy world of Shrek via new DLC.
