‘Super Gran’ star Gudrun Ure dies aged 98
Gudrun Ure, the star of ’80s children’s television show Super Gran, has died aged 98.
The show, which ran from 1985 to 1987, tells the story about an elderly grandmother who acquires superpowers after being struck by a magic ray. Granny Smith, who is usually accompanied by her grandson Willard, uses her powers to protect the residents of the fictional town Chisleton.
Super Gran also featured guest appearances from various actors including footballer George Best, comedian and writer Spike Milligan, darts player Eric Bristow and actor Roy Kinnear. The theme song to the show was performed by Scottish comedian and actor Billy Connolly, who also starred in the series.
Ure also appeared in various stage productions and television shows, appearing opposite Orson Welles in a 1951 stage version of Othello.
She was also known for appearing in a number of educational films by Encyclopaedia Britannica about William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, in which she portrayed Lady Macbeth.
Her niece Kate McNeill confirmed that Ure died at her home in London. As reported by the BBC, McNeill described her as a “really kind” person.
She also spoke about her aunt’s other work, which included appearances on Casualty, Midsomer Murders and The Crow Road.
“She had a very memorable voice,” McNeill described. “I remember my husband was watching Casualty one night, and I went ‘that’s Gudrun’ as soon as I heard the voice.”
Ure, who was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland, was married for over 40 years to John Ramsay, who died in 2008. They shared a stepson together.
