‘Ted Lasso’ reportedly gearing up for season four return
Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso is reportedly gearing up for another round on the streaming field.
Deadline reported yesterday (August 24) that production studio Warner Bros. Television has picked up the options on cast members Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift. Variety adds in their own report that Jason Sudeikis will likely be involved in “some capacity” as an executive producer.
Deadline continues to state that the studio is expected to reach out to cast members Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, and Juno Temple – all of whom require SAG-AFTRA contacts, unlike Waddingham, Goldstein, and Swift, who are contracted under UK acting union Equity – for new option deals.
Both reports indicate that it is still early before season four is officially greenlighted. With its 2023 finale wrapping up most story loose ends, it’s unclear where a new season will head towards. However, in January, Warner Bros. TV CEO Channing Dungey had teased Variety about a possible season four.
“I mean, you watched the finale, there’s a little bit of a door that could be kicked back open if need be,” Dungey said.
“I wouldn’t put the period on the end of that sentence just yet. There is still a lot of love for Ted Lasso. And I think that there still is a lot of enthusiasm on the part of Apple for Ted Lasso. Should the opportunity arise, we’d be excited to jump back in to making more…. There are always conversations that are ongoing, just nothing that’s official.”
A 2023 survey showed that Ted Lasso was the third most watched original streaming show of that year, just behind The Mandalorian and Loki.
Earlier this month, Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence (Scrubs) expressed his interest in a new season to Collider, but cautioned that its fate would ultimately be decided by Sudeikis.
“We all loved the experience,” Lawrence said. “As fans, we’d all kill if it was going again, but everybody would say the same thing, which is: whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it”.
In an April 2023 interview with NME, cast member Nick Mohammed was asked about a possible Ted Lasso season four. “Whether it will end, whether it’ll be a film [next], whether there’ll be a break and then season four, I don’t know,” he said.
However, upon news outlets breaking the news, Mohammed published a cryptic tweet yesterday: “Told ya!”.
