Warner Bros made the announcement earlier today (December 27) but hasn’t given a reason for the change in release date.
However, the studio did reveal that The Batman 2’s slot was being filled by a new, untitled Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Tom Cruise film that will open on October 2, 2026 instead.
Incidentally, if everything had run to schedule when the sequel was first confirmed in January 2023, the Robert Pattinson-staring sequel would have been in cinemas by now – The Batman 2 was initially slated for October 2024.
Further down the line, delays reportedly caused by last year’s SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes have meant that the movie was postponed to October 2 2026, pushing its release back a whole year.
In a four-star-review of The Batman, NME wrote: “Director Matt Reeves has mixed up gritty mob drama with film-noir detective thriller – and thanks to Dano’s ultra-creepy villain, some psychological horror too. Most of the time it comes off brilliantly.”
NME also praised Kravitz’ portrayal of Catwoman, calling her “perfect” for the role: “Here, Reeves gives Kravitz a proper backstory and tells it via seedy nightclubs and abandoned construction sites.”
Reeves’ version of the iconic story led to a spin-off exploring the character Penguin, who, in The Batman, is played by Colin Farrell. The Penguin was released on Max this year, also experiencing delays in production as a result of the strikes.
In other news, earlier this month Pattinson revealed how a stranger once asked why he stopped acting after appearing in the Twilight franchise.
In a new interview with the New York Times he recalled earlier this year, how he took a trip to the Caribbean and at passport control, the immigration officer said to him, “Hey, you’re the guy from Twilight. Why’d you stop acting?”
Pattinson said he wasn’t sure how to respond adding: “I was like …, ‘I’m Batman?’. She just laughed.”
