‘The Boys’ star Valorie Curry asks fans to “respect boundaries” after Comic Con incident
The Boys actress Valorie Curry has appealed to fans to “respect boundaries” after having a “deeply uncomfortable” encounter during Comic Con Northern Ireland.
The actress joined the satirical superhero series in its latest season as the far-right extremist Misty Tucker Gray, also known as Firecracker.
In a video message posted to her Instagram story on Saturday (September 7), Curry mentioned an encounter with two fans who she says became “angry” when she didn’t comply with an “inappropriate” request of theirs.
Curry said that while her character had done “some pretty extreme things” on the show, “it’s not okay and it’s not funny to demand those things from me in person”.
“I just got back from the first day of Comic-Con in Northern Ireland, in Belfast and by-and-large everyone was fantastic,” she began.
“I’ve only just started doing these conventions on my own and everyone, for the most part, has been so lovely and so kind and so respectful – it’s really been wonderful. But we do need to talk about boundaries and what is appropriate in terms of behaviour.
“I know people saw a character that I play do some pretty extreme things on The Boys. I don’t care if you’re in costume, I don’t care if you are in character. It’s not okay and it’s not funny to demand those things from me in person at my booth. It’s not okay.
“Frankly, to the person who did that repeatedly today, I made it pretty clear that it wasn’t OK and that only seemed to make this person and their friend angry. I didn’t think this needed to be explained but I was deeply uncomfortable – it was quite clear I was uncomfortable.”
She added: “Honestly, you should know better. Everybody else knows better. I don’t know what reaction you were looking for. Nobody was laughing.”
Curry also said she enjoys interacting with the show’s fans, she is “not going to be able to do this if people are acting this way because it makes me so uncomfortable”.
In a statement to the BBC, organisers Monopoly Events said that they had been in contact with Curry.
“They are not in character or portraying the roles you see on the screen,” they said.
“Please treat all of the guests and each other with respect, and be aware that it isn’t acceptable to make inappropriate comments regardless of being in cosplay and ‘portraying’ a character yourself.
“Making a guest, or other person, feel uncomfortable for you and your friends amusement is unacceptable.
“We have a zero tolerance policy to this behaviour and if any guest or member of the public feels harassed, please highlight any concerns you have to a member of our security team.”
In other news, Curry recently said that she hopes Firecracker dies in The Boys’ final season.
“I hope she dies. She has it coming from many people. She’s awful. She’s horrible. I hope she dies. I hope it’s not because of the meds, because that seems too easy,” she said.
