‘The Brutalist’ used AI to augment Adrian Brody’s performance, editor reveals
Oscar contender The Brutalist used Artificial Intelligence to augment dialogue within one scene, the film’s editor has revealed.
In an interview with Red Shark News, Dávid Jancsó, who also edited 2024 action film Monkey Man, used AI software Respeecher to correct a sequence where a letter written by Adrien Brody’s character, László Tóth, is read aloud.
Jancsó explained: “I am a native Hungarian speaker and I know that it is one of the most difficult languages to learn to pronounce. Even with Adrien’s Hungarian background, it’s not that simple. It’s an extremely unique language.
“We coached (Brody and co-star Felicity Jones) and they did a fabulous job but we also wanted to perfect it so that not even locals will spot any difference”.
AI continues to be a divisive subject in Hollywood. It was part of the disputes in both the writers’ and actors’ strikes of 2023. Nevertheless, Jancsó argued that it shouldn’t be treated with as much suspicion.
“It is controversial in the industry to talk about AI, but it shouldn’t be” he said. “We should be having a very open discussion about what tools AI can provide us with. There’s nothing in the film using AI that hasn’t been done before.
“It just makes the process a lot faster. We use AI to create these tiny little details that we didn’t have the money or the time to shoot”.
The Brutalist won three Golden Globes at this year’s ceremony, including Best Motion Picture -Drama, and Best Actor- Drama for Brody’s performance as a Hungarian-Jewish architect who emigrates to America and pursues the American Dream.
Director Brady Corbet used his acceptance speech for Best Director at the Globes to send condolences to actor Aubrey Plaza after the death of her husband Jeff Baena.
AI has caused some complaints from members of the film industry and fans in recent times. The premiere of an AI film in London was cancelled following social media backlash last summer. Recently, Marvel star Robert Downey Jr said he would “sue all future executives” who make AI replicas of him.
