‘The Goonies 2’ is not happening after all, according to original cast members
A sequel to The Goonies is not in the works after all, according original cast members Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton.
Earlier this week, The Sun claimed that The Goonies 2 would be filmed next summer, with Steven Spielberg directing and many of the original cast members returning. However, Feldman and Plimpton have now shut down the report.
“People, there is no ‘Goonies 2’ script, there is no one ‘attached,’” Plimpton wrote on Instagram. “Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real. What IS real is CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION AND VOTE!!!!”
Feldman added in a post on X that he had “no information” whatsoever that a sequel was in development.
The cult adventure movie was released in 1985 and follows a group of kids in Oregon who try to save their homes from foreclosure and follow a treasure map to a long-lost fortune. The film was notable for starring the likes of Lord of the Rings‘ Sean Astin, Marvel‘s Josh Brolin, and Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan in early roles.
Talk of a sequel has been doing the rounds for a number of years, with screenwriter Chris Columbus revealing in 2021 that late original director Richard Donner once spoke to him about a potential follow-up movie.
“He called me and said, ‘You know what we should do? We’re gonna get on my boat, smoke pot for three days and come up with an idea for ‘Goonies 2’,” he recalled to Empire.
“I said to Dick, ‘Well, first of all, I don’t smoke pot. But maybe if I come down, we’ll have a couple of drinks together and sit on the boat.’ It never happened. And I regret that. Because I would drop everything to do that right now.”
In 2020, Steven Spielberg – who wrote the original story treatment for The Goonies – spoke on a cast reunion call about why a sequel has never gotten off the ground.
“Chris, Dick and I – and Lauren [Shuler Donner] – have had a lot of conversations about it,” he said. “Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water.
“The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre, I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the eighties.”
