The Last Dinner Party have covered Blondie‘s ‘Call Me’ for Australian broadcaster triple j’s Like A Version series.
The NME The Cover stars’ unique take on the Blondie and Debbie Harry classic see the band swap out Blondie’s more punk-leaning brand of rock for their patented indie stylings. Listen to The Last Dinner Party’s cover of Blondie’s ‘Call Me’ below.
Speaking to triple j about why they chose the song as their cover, lead singer Abigail Morris and bassist Georgia Davies explained that they used to sing the track as their “go-to” pick at karaoke. Morris said: “We would destroy it at house parties and clear the room. This is us trying to reclaim all those years and do it well.”
The cover’s publishing comes after the band were announced on the shortlist for the Mercury Prize 2024. The overall winner of the 2024 Mercury Prize will be revealed in September, with the award’s broadcast partner BBC Music providing television and radio coverage.
In March, The Last Dinner Party spoke to NME about new material and the response to their debut album at the BRITs 2024 – shortly before being presented with the Rising Star award.
“The record came out and we went straight on tour,” explained Morris. “It was the best tour we’ve ever done because it was the first time that people knew the words to everything. It was really, very beautiful.” She talked about another yet-to-be-released track called ‘Big Dog’, which has been played live at TLDP’s gigs. You can watch NME‘s video interview in full above.
The Last Dinner Party and set to embark on a European headline tour this autumn. They’ll also perform at TRNSMT and Reading & Leeds this summer following appearances at Roskilde and Rock Werchter.
In January, the band were crowned the winner of the BBC Sound Of 2024 poll. They previously featured in the 2023 NME 100 – which listed the essential emerging artists for the year ahead.
At the end of 2023, The Last Dinner Party said they were “trying to ignore the words ‘hype’ and ‘buzzy band’” while reflecting on their huge rise.
