The Wanted’s Max George thought he was “going to die” after he was rushed to hospital with heart issues
The Wanted’s Max George has said he thought was “going to die” after he was rushed to hospital with heart issues last month.
At the time, the singer told fans via social media that he had been hospitalised after some tests revealed “issues” with his heart. He said that he initially was “feeling really unwell” and was having some tests done. It was later confirmed that he would need surgery for a heart condition.
He also explained that he had “a 2:1 block” in his heart, meaning that his heart beats slower or more irregularly than it should. He underwent heart surgery to have a pacemaker fitted shortly afterwards, and was discharged from hospital in time for Christmas Day.
Speaking in a new interview in The Sun, George said at one point he was so convinced he wouldn’t make it, that he took out his phone and started spelling out what to do with his assets.
“If I could go from being absolutely on top of the world to being told ‘the bottom part of your heart isn’t working’, I kept thinking in my head, ‘Well, what if the top half stops working overnight?'” he said.
“When you get told that you really realise what your responsibilities are. I’ve got a partner, Maisie [Smith], I’ve got a family.”
He said December 13, two days after he was first admitted to the hospital, was the “worst” day, as his blood pressure and heart rate both dropped.
George added: “It was quite close that night, it really felt like my neck was closing up and that’s when the sort of panic really kicked in. I felt like I was dying. It was the worst, I felt emotional.”
When he eventually learned he was having a pacemaker fitted, the singer added: “Now we were working towards something. I was absolutely buzzing.”
Following the surgery George said: “The first face I saw was Maisie’s and I remember that being really nice – like that was the first time I actually felt like a real person again, and I had a heart.”
Earlier, this month, he shared another update online, confirming to fans that he had gone into hospital again.
Taking to Instagram, he explained that he had been feeling an odd sensation since having the pacemaker fitted and asked fans if they knew anyone who had the same experience.
When he was discharged from hospital late last month, George explained that he wasn’t completely in the clear as the doctors found there was more investigation needed into a potential issue with his lungs.
He also shared an image after the surgical procedure, showing that the pacemaker had been placed under a tattoo that reads ‘04.08.1988’ – the birthdate of his former bandmate Tom Parker, who passed away in March 2022 at the age of 33 after battling brain cancer.
