‘The Witcher 4’ is official, will star a grown-up Ciri: “It was always about her”

The Witcher 4 has officially been confirmed, via an epic six-minute-long video featuring a grown-up Ciri.

A sequel to 2015’s The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt was first teased back in 2022 with production ramping up earlier this year. Now developers CD Projekt Red have shared a six-minute teaser trailer of The Witcher 4, giving fans their first glimpse of the new game.

The trailer focuses on a grown-up Ciri instead of previous protagonist Geralt but the two are linked. Ciri is Geralt’s adopted daughter and featured heavily in Wild Hunt.

“There are no gods here, only monsters. We’re thrilled to reveal the first look at The Witcher 4 — our upcoming single-player open-world RPG,” reads an announcement. “It marks the beginning of a new saga with Ciri as a protagonist, embarking on her own journey to become a professional monster slayer.”

Towards the end of the video, a mysterious voice can be heard which some fans believe is Geralt. It would back up what voice actor Doug Cockle said in August – “What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game, we just don’t know how much, and the game won’t focus on Geralt. ”It was revealed earlier this week that Cockle was given a “slap” on the wrist for that spoiler from CD Projekt Red.

Speaking about the decision to focus on Ciri this time around, executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga told IGN that it was a “very organic, very logical” choice.

“It was always about her, starting from Saga when you read it in the books. She’s an amazing, layered character. And of course, as a protagonist we said goodbye to Geralt previously. So this is a continuation. I guess for all of us it’s like she was meant to be. That was always her.”

“She really deserves a stage and we want players to really experience her story because she has so much to tell, so much to prove,” added game director Sebastian Kalemba. “The amount of challenges that are in front of her give us so much amazing energy and fuel to create an epic saga that we had no choice but to go with it. We all felt that this is the way. I believe this is the super right choice.”

No release date for Witcher 4 has been announced just yet.

In other news, Harrison Ford has praised Troy Baker’s take on Indiana Jones from the recently released The Great Circle.
