There’s already a ‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’ film in the works

'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33'.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was only released last week but a movie adaptation is already in the works.

Created by indie studio Sandfall Interactive, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based action role-playing game set in a world inspired by Belle Époque France. Players need to lead the members of Expedition 33 on their quest to destroy the Paintress, a god-like figure who can wipe people from existence by simply painting an age on her monolith.

“As the number decreases each year, humanity faces impending extinction. Players follow Expedition 33 on a mission to end this cycle by confronting the Paintress before she paints death again,” reads the official description.

The title launched last week after becoming the best-reviewed game of 2025. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has also sold more than one million copies in its first week, with many more playing the game via Xbox Game Pass.

Before Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launched, it was reported by Variety that a big screen adaptation was in the works. Sandfall will be teaming up with Story Kitchen (Sonic The Hedgehog, Tomb Raider) for the project. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of Expedition 33 to the big screen,” said Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson & Mike Goldberg in a statement. “The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”

“Partnering with Story Kitchen allows us to expand the universe of Clair Obscur beyond the gaming realm,” added Sandfall Interactive’s CEO Guillaume Broche. “Their expertise in storytelling and passion for our vision make them the perfect team to translate our game into a captivating film.”

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 features actors Charlie Cox (Gustave), Jennifer English (Maelle) and Ben Starr (Verso) with Andy Serkis playing Renoir. Casting for the film version has yet to be decided.  According to Starr, Clair Obscur is “a love letter to the games that shaped me”.

Earlier this month it was reported that Sydney Sweeney is set to star in the movie adaptation of Split Fiction.

In other news, Cult Of The Lamb’s publisher has revealed that someone in Vatican City bought a copy of the twisted roguelike game, one day before the funeral of Pope Francis.
